Edwards along with O'Neil represent the initial candidates in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was sacked on Sunday following the squad's 10-match without a victory beginning to the top-flight campaign.
Furthermore Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic links to the club - are part of the names to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.
Edwards is presently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential hurdle to his hiring at Wolves' stadium.
However the former Luton manager - who played over a century of appearances for the club during his playing career - is said to be a strong contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the club directors as they begin the process of hiring a fresh head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise contender, although he would be a surprising appointment considering he was released by Wolves in the previous winter.
The former West Ham United player is currently unemployed meaning the club would not be required to provide any buyout fee.
