Eurovision Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

An new term came to light several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is unique to Gaza, per insights from medical experts including paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for doctors to attend to a young patient who has seen the death of their complete family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Essential medical supplies are being blocked those in need, and international watchdogs have stated that atrocities are ongoing. Authorities rejects these accusations, consistent with how it denies all charges it is accused of. Yet as traumatised orphans are now freezing in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its stated mission of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, it seems, is what unity looks like.

The contest, notably banned Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be completely different.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that global media are still prevented from independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A competition that initially championed harmony has now become a blatant mechanism to sanitize military aggression.
