Manchester United Poised to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for the WSL Side
The forward, with half a year remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the winter break has seen further activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
