The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Total Trust' in Teenager Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

When an 18-year-old makes club history in a crucial European tie against Manchester City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The young player, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek return to confirm a quarter-final berth.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from Xabi Alonso in the new year.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a late substitute in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, every day you head to training and each day you have a game," said Pitarch following his first appearance.

"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked the coach. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his manager.

"His standout trait is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining the club's renowned youth academy.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to represent either country at the highest level.

Under international regulations, players may appear for different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.

He has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and under-20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his rise with interest.

Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose La Roja, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team pursue future success.

Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to think about it excessively - I must earn my minutes on the field," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
